The 5th District Democratic Women’s Club has an amazing story that promotes voting “by the people, for all people” which was my inspiration for creating this piece. I wanted to convey the excitement that comes with voting and making positive changes in the community. Voting has the power to change life for all people and it is our duty to vote with each member of society in mind. It is important to recognize the privilege we are given when we say that women have been able to vote for 100 years. White women’s vote became protected in 1920, but black women were only secured the same protection in 1965. This is a reminder to never take the privilege of voting for granted. I wanted to emphasize that every citizen should use the power of their vote to help create a society filled with compassion for all people.
I first found out about this competition through a resource my mom had a work who told me to enter in the competition. After submitting this piece, I was informed that I had won and my design would be featured in over 500 yard signs and 3 billboards around the Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS.
